Wolfgang Ketterle

Wolfgang Ketterle (born October 21, 1957) is a German physicist and professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research has focused on experiments that trap and cool atoms to temperatures close to absolute zero, and he led one of the first groups to realize Bose Einstein condensation in these systems in 1995. For this achievement, as well as early fundamental studies of condensates, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2001, together with Eric Allin Cornell and Carl Wieman.

Wolfgang Ketterle (ur. 21 października 1957 w Heidelbergu), niemiecki fizyk, profesor na MIT. W 2001 r. został wyróżniony Nagrodą Noblą w dziedzinie fizyki.Urodził się w Heidelbergu w Niemczech, uczęszczał do szkół w Heidelbergu i Eppelheim. W 1976 wstąpił na Uniwersytet Ruprechta Karla w Heidelbergu, 2 lata później przeniósł się na Uniwersytet Techniczny w Monachium, gdzie w 1982 uzyskał tytuł magistra. W 1986 zdobył doktorat w Instytucie Optyki Kwantowej w Garching w ramach Instytutu Maxa Placnka. Następnie pracował naukowo w Garching i Heidelbergu. W 1990 dołączył do grupy Davida E. Pritcharda w Naukowych Laboratoriach Elektronicznych MIT. W 1993 dołączył do kadry naukowej wydziału fizyki MIT. Od 1998 jego stanowisko profesorskie jest sponsorowane przez fundusz Johna D. MacArthura.
