Winston-Salem

Winston-Salem is a city in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 185,776; in 2004 the city annexed an additional 17,483 raising the population to 203,259. It is the county seat and largest city of Forsyth County and the fifth-largest city in the state. Winston-Salem is a prominent municipality in the Piedmont Triad region and is home to one of the tallest office buildings in the region, the Wachovia Center. It is often referred to as the "Twin City" for its dual heritage, although "Camel City" is another popular nickname, referring to the city's prominent tobacco industry (after Camel cigarettes). Many locals, however, use the shortened name "Winston" in informal speech. "The Dash" is another nickname for Winston-Salem, referring to the hyphen between Winston and Salem. Winston-Salem is the home of Wake Forest University, a nationally distinguished private university.

Winston-Salem est une ville de Caroline du Nord, aux États-Unis d'Amérique, située dans le nord de l'État et à l’ouest de la capitale, Raleigh. C'est le siège du comté de Forsyth et la quatrième plus grande ville de l’État de la Caroline du nord. Avec Greensboro et High Point, elle forme une conurbation appelée Triade de Piedmont. Le plus haut bâtiment de la ville est le Wachovia Center avec une hauteur de et ses 34 étages. Winston-Salem porte le surnom de (Twin City en anglais). En 2007, la ville comptait habitants, ce qui en faisait la 107 plus grande ville du pays.

Winston-Salem - miasto w Stanach Zjednoczonych, w stanie Karolina Północna.Miasto liczy 185,8 tys. mieszkańców, a jego oficjalny obszar metropolitalny (hrabstwa Davie, Forsyth, Stokes i Yadkin) 421,96 tys. mieszkańców (dane z 2000).  Konurbacja złożona z Winston-Salem i oddalonych o 40 km miast Greensboro i High Point liczy 1,34 mln mieszkańców (dane z 2004).Obecne miasto powstało w 1913 z połączenia dwóch miast: Salem, założonego w 1753, i Winston, założonego w 1849. Dużą rolę w historii miasta odegrał przemysł tytoniowy. W mieście znajduje się siedziba koncernu tytoniowego R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, produkującego między innymi papierosy marki Winston i Salem.
