Windows 98 (codenamed Memphis) is a graphical operating system released on June 25 1998 by Microsoft and the successor to Windows 95. Like its predecessor, it is a hybrid 16-bit/32-bit monolithic product based on MS-DOS.The first edition of Windows 98 is designated by the internal version number 4.10.1998, or 4.10.1998A if it has been updated with the Security CD from Microsoft. Windows 98 Second Edition is designated by the internal version number 4.10.2222A, or 4.10.2222B if it has been updated with the Security CD from Microsoft. The successor to Windows 98 is Windows Me.

Windows 98 (Codename: Memphis) ist ein am 25. Juni 1998 von Microsoft publiziertes Betriebssystem. Der Support von Microsoft für Windows 98 sowie Windows ME ist seit dem 11. Juli 2006 beendet.Das Betriebssystem ist im wesentlichen eine Weiterentwicklung von Microsoft Windows 95. Somit ist es wie dieses ein 16-Bit/32-Bit-Hybrid-System. Die Installationsvoraussetzungen von Anwendungen lassen den Schluss zu, dass die Win-95-C-Ausgabe und das erste Windows 98 im Kernel noch weitgehend identisch sind. Windows 98 unterstützt ansatzweise präemptives Multitasking, das bei der NT-Reihe (Win NT/2000/XP/Vista) zum Standard gehört. Das bedeutet, dass das Betriebssystem bei der Zuteilung von CPU-Zeit an aktive Programme eine gewisse Kontrolle ausübt. Voller Speicherschutz ist nur bei NT/2000/XP/Vista gewährleistet und nur mit Hilfe externer Taskmanager lassen sich auch unter Windows 98 bestimmten Programmen Prioritäten zuweisen, wodurch sich die Systemstabilität erhöhen kann.

Jego premiera miała miejsce 25 czerwca 1998.System w dużej mierze opiera się na Windows 95, ale zawiera poprawioną (lub dodaną) obsługę standardów takich jak USB, MMX i AGP. Windows 98 obsługuje system plików FAT32, wprowadzony już w wersji 95 OSR2. Dodano obsługę wielu monitorów, WebTV. Dodatkową nowością jest większe zintegrowanie przeglądarki internetowej Internet Explorer z interfejsem użytkownika, tzn. Active Desktop.

Windows 98 (chiamato in codice Memphis, numero versione 4.10.1998) è un sistema operativo per personal computer a 32 bit lanciato il 25 giugno 1998 da Microsoft.Durante l'anteprima mondiale in diretta su CNN il sistema andò in crash e comparve una schermata blu di errore sotto gli occhi sbigottiti di Bill Gates dopo che il presentatore aveva inserito uno scanner usb.Il sistema operativo fu il successore di Windows 95 ed ebbe un supporto migliorato per gli standard hardware come USB, MMX e AGP. Altre caratteristiche furono il supporto per il file system FAT32, la nascita di DirectX, monitor multipli, WebTV e l'integrazione di Internet Explorer nell'interfaccia grafica (GUI) di Windows, chiamato Active Desktop (possibilità di impostare come sfondo del desktop pagine web in HTML o oggetti interattivi/animati).
