Wilmots has arguably been one of the best Belgian players of the 1990s, scoring freely from midfield. He spent ten seasons in the Belgian league, most notably with R. Standard Liege. His ability to strike from deep-lying positions was never better illustrated than when he struck five goals in helping FC Schalke 04 to reach the UEFA Cup final in 1996/97. In the 1998 World Cup he scored twice against Mexico.
