William the Silent

For other men named William of Orange, see William of Orange (disambiguation) Prince William I of Orange, Count of Nassau-Dillenburg (April 24, 1533 –  July 10, 1584), also widely known as William the Silent , was born in the House of Nassau. He became Prince of Orange in 1544 and is thereby the founder of the House of Orange-Nassau. He was the main leader of the Dutch revolt against the Spanish that set off the Eighty Years' War and resulted in the formal independence of the United Provinces in 1648.

Le prince Guillaume I d'Orange-Nassau (en néerlandais : Willem van Oranje), prince d'Orange, comte de Nassau, aussi appelé Guillaume d'Orange ou Guillaume le Taciturne est né le 24 avril 1533 à Dillenburg et mort le 10 juillet 1584, assassiné par Balthazar Gérard au Prinsenhof de Delft. Il a été inhumé à la Nieuwe Kerk de cette ville. Il est le fils de Guillaume de Nassau-Dillenbourg.

Wilhelm von Oranien (nl: Willem van Oranje) (* 24. April 1533 in Dillenburg; † 10. Juli 1584 in Delft), auch bekannt als Wilhelm der Schweiger (nl: Willem de Zwijger), war Führer im niederländischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg gegen Spanien, auch bekannt als Achtzigjähriger Krieg (1568-1648).

Wilhelm I Orański z przydomkiem Niemy lub Milczący (ur. 24 kwietnia 1533 w Dillenburgu, zm. 10 lipca 1584 w Delft) – hrabia Nassau, książę Oranii od 1544, stadhouder prowincji Niderlandów od 1572.Początkowo służył na dworze Małgorzaty Parmeńskiej, później był przywódcą walk z Hiszpanią o niepodległość prowincji (1561). Podczas tłumienia powstania przez księcia Albę uciekł do Niemiec. W 1572 powrócił i podjął walkę z Albą. Od 1572 wybierany stadhouderem kolejnych prowincji Niderlandów.Po zawarciu unii utrechckiej 1579 stracił wpływy w południowych Niderlandach, co jednak doprowadziło do powstania Republiki Zjednoczonych Prowincji. Został zabity przez fanatyka katolickiego Balthasara Gérarda w Delft. Bohater narodowy Holandii.
