New South Wales
,
Australia
who co-discovered a passage inland through the
Blue Mountains
from
Sydney
.Lawson was born in
London
and arrived in Sydney as an ensign with the
New South Wales Corps
in
1800
, soon being posted to
Norfolk Island
. In 1808 and 1809 he was in charge of the new settlement at Coal River, now the city of
Newcastle
..Shortly after 1808, Lawson was appointed aide-de-camp to
George Johnston
and was granted 500 acres (2 km²) at
Prospect
, which he named Vereran Hall. He built a 40-room mansion there.
