William Congreve (* 24. Januar 1670 in Bardsey bei Leeds; † 19. Januar 1729 in London) war ein englischer Dramatiker und Dichter. Congreve studierte Rechtswissenschaften am Trinity College in Dublin. Dort lernte er Jonathan Swift kennen, der lebenslang sein Freund blieb. Nach seinem Studienabschluss wurde Congreve Schüler von John Dryden und begann mit dem Schreiben von Theaterstücken.

William Congreve (dramaturg)
William Congreve (ur. 24 stycznia 1670 w Bardsey koło Leeds, zm. 19 stycznia 1729 w Londynie) – angielski dramatopisarz i poeta.
Dzieciństwo i młodość w Irlandii. Studiował prawo w londyńskim korporacji Middle Temple. Porzucił je, gdy jego pierwsza komedia – The Old Bachelor (Stary kawaler) – została w 1693 wystawiona w teatrze Drury Lane.
Zmarł w wyniku obrażeń odniesionych przy wywróceniu się karety w drodze na kurację do Bath. Został pochowany w Opactwie Westminsterskim.
