West Germany

former country in central Europe which was created by uniting the British French and American occupied zones in 1945 (reunited with East Germany in 1990)

West Germany (in German Westdeutschland) was the common English name for the Federal Republic of Germany, or FRG (in German Bundesrepublik Deutschland or BRD), from its founding on 24 May 1949 to 2 October 1990, before the five states of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR, informally East Germany) acceded with effect on 3 October 1990. Since, the current 16-state Federal Republic of Germany is simply called Germany.
