Wessex

Wessex was one of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms that preceded the Kingdom of England. It was named after the West Saxons and was situated in the south and southwest of England. It existed as a kingdom from the 6th century until the emergence of the English state in the 9th century, and as an earldom between 1016 and 1066. "Wessex" has not had any official existence since that time, but it has remained a familiar term since Thomas Hardy revived it for his West Country novels and poetry. The earldom was revived in 1999 for His Royal Highness The Prince Edward. Today some wish to see Wessex restored as a region of England.

Le Wessex fut un royaume anglo-saxon qui couvre la côte sud de l'Angleterre. Ses souverains conquirent les autres royaumes anglo-saxons (Mercie, Est-Anglie, etc.) pour devenir rois de toute l'Angleterre. Leur dynastie s'arrête à la mort du roi Édouard le Confesseur. Parmi les concurrents à sa succession se trouvait Harold Godwinson, comte de Wessex qui prend un temps possession du trône mais meurt à la bataille de Hastings.

Wessex (altenglisch Westseaxe = „West-Sachsen“) war eines der angelsächsischen Königreiche während der Heptarchie, das vor dem Königreich England bestand. Wessex lag im Süden und Südwesten Englands. Zeitlich hatte es etwa vom 6. Jahrhundert bis zum 10. Jahrhundert Bestand.

Od północy Wessex otaczało morze. Od IX wieku Wessex objął przewodnictwo heptarchii.Przyjmuje się, że w Wesseksie nastąpiła próba zjednoczenia duchowieństwa z ludem, potrzebna po upadku dynastii Karolingów i zdeprawowaniu ludu oraz papiestwa i kościoła na zachodzie Europy.
