Weather satellite

A weather satellite is a type of satellite that is primarily used to monitor the weather and climate of the Earth. These meteorological satellites, however, see more than clouds and cloud systems. City lights, fires, effects of pollution, auroras, sand and dust storms, snow cover, ice mapping, boundaries of ocean currents, energy flows, etc., are other types of environmental information collected using weather satellites.

Un satellite météorologique est un satellite artificiel qui a comme mission principale de prendre des données pour la surveillance du temps et du climat de la Terre. Avec chaque nouvelle génération, les senseurs à bord de ces satellites deviennent plus performants et divisent l’information en plus de canaux de telle sorte qu’on peut les utiliser pour différencier les divers phénomènes météorologiques : nuages, précipitations, vents, brouillard, etc.

Ein Wettersatellit ist ein Erdbeobachtungssatellit, der der Beobachtung meteorologischer Vorgänge auf der Erde dient. Insbesondere in Gebieten, in denen keine Beobachtung vor Ort möglich bzw. sehr teuer ist (z.B. Ozeane), sind Daten von Wettersatellien unverzichtbar. Mit der Auswertung und Nutzung von Wettersatelliten befasst sich ein Teilgebiet der Meteorologie, die Satellitenmeteorologie.

Satelita meteorologiczny jest sztucznym satelitą Ziemi wyposażonym w aparaturę do pomiarów własności fizycznych i chemicznych atmosfery i powierzchni Ziemi. Satelity meteorologiczne mogą być geostacjonarne (stacjonarne nad jednym punktem nad równikiem) lub krążyć na tzw. orbitach biegunowych. Satelity na orbicie synchronicznej ze słońcem (ang. sun-synchronous) na orbicie biegunowej przelatują nad danym punktem Ziemi o mniej więcej tej samej porze. Pierwszym satelitą ściśle meteorologicznym był TIROS 1. Dotychczas instrumenty na satelitach meteorologicznych używane były do pasywnej teledetekcji atmosfery i powierzchni ziemi. Obecnie (2006) istnieją plany wprowadzenia na orbitę instrumentów do aktywnej teledetekcji (radar i lidar) np. na satelicie Cloudsat w ramach satelitarnej sekwencji-A.

Een weersatelliet is een type satelliet die hoofdzakelijk wordt gebruikt om het weer en/of het klimaat van de Aarde te controleren.Toch zien deze meteorologische satellieten meer dan wolken en wolkensystemen, bijvoorbeeld de lichten van de stad, vuren, verontreiniging (lucht, water), aurora's (noordelijke of zuidelijke lichten), stof (zand), sneeuw, ijs, oceaanstromen, energieafval, enz.
