Waterford

Waterford ( or "haven from the wind-swept sea"; in Irish: Port Láirge) is a city in the Republic of Ireland. It is the primary city of the South East region, and the fifth largest in the country. Founded in 914 AD, by the Vikings, it is Ireland's oldest city.Waterford is the largest city in Ireland to retain its Viking-derived name, Vedrarfjord. Reginald's Tower is the oldest urban civic building in Ireland, and the oldest monument to retain its Viking name. It is to this day Waterford's most recognisable landmark. The tower is believed to be the first building in Ireland to use mortar.

Waterford (irisch Port Láirge /ˌpoɽt ˈlɑːɾig´ə/) war ursprünglich die Hauptstadt des County Waterford in Irland. Heute ist sie separat verwaltet und das County Waterford hat seinen administrativen Sitz in Dungarvan. Die Stadt im Südosten von Irland hat eine Fläche von 42 km² und eine Einwohnerzahl von 45.748 (Stand 2006). Die Stadt wurde im 9. Jahrhundert von den Wikingern gegründet und war Irlands erste Stadt, die diese Bezeichnung verdiente. Heute ist sie die siebtgrößte Stadt Irlands.

Założone w roku 914 przez Wikingów, jest najstarszym miastem w Irlandii. Waterford jest największym miastem w kraju, spośród tych które zachowały nazwy pochodzące od Wikingów. Wieża Reginalda (Reginald's Tower), nazwana tak na cześć załozyciela miasta, Regnalla, to najstarszy miejski zabytek w Irlandii i jednocześnie najstatszy zachowany zabytek z czasów Wikingów. Dziś jest to także najbardziej znany zabytek Waterford.
