Die Ware (von mittelhochdeutsch: war(e) in Verwahrung Genommenes) bildet die ökonomische Elementarform der Marktwirtschaft. Sie ist ein materielles Gut, das durch seine Eigenschaften menschliche Bedürfnisse befriedigt, allerdings nur durch Tausch bzw.  Kauf erwerbbar ist. Kennzeichen der Ware ist, dass der gesellschaftliche Bedarf ausgenutzt wird, um einen ökonomischen Gegenwert zu verlangen; wirkliche Waren werden also explizit für den Handel produziert. Diese ökonomische Kalkulation unterstellt, dass sich in der Gesellschaft eine Form von Geld etabliert hat. Den Prozess des zur-Ware-werdens bezeichnet man auch als Kommodifizierung.
