War of the Austrian Succession
The War of the Austrian Succession (
1740–
48), also known as King George's War in North America, involved almost all the major European powers, but caused only minor exchanges of territory. The war began under the pretext that
Maria Theresa of Austria was ineligible to succeed to the
Habsburg throne, because
Salic law precluded royal inheritance by a woman.
