WAV

audio file format for IBM-compatible personal computers which is used widely to distribute sounds over the Internet

WAV (or WAVE), short for Waveform audio format, is a Microsoft and IBM audio file format standard for storing audio on PCs. It is a variant of the RIFF bitstream format method for storing data in “chunks”, and thus also close to the IFF and the AIFF format used on Amiga and Macintosh computers, respectively. It is the main format used on Windows systems for raw audio.

.wav files are also used as the sound source in wavetable synthesis, e.g. in E-mu's SoundFont. In addition, .wav files are also supported by some MIDI sequencers as add-on audio. That is, pre-recorded .wav files are played back by control commands written in the sequence script.
