Eine Thermalquelle ist eine hydrothermale Quelle, bei der Wasser an die Oberfläche tritt, welches signifikant wärmer ist als das umgebende Grundwasser. Wenn das Wasser eine besonders hohe Temperatur besitzt, spricht man auch von einer heißen Quelle. Das Wasser wird unterirdisch erhitzt, entweder durch vulkanische Aktivitäten oder indem das Wasser bis in tiefere Bereiche der Erde zirkuliert und sich dort am heißen Gestein erwärmt. Dabei erreichen die heißesten Quellen Mitteleuropas in Aachen 74° C, in Wiesbaden 66° C. In vulkanogenen Gebieten ist die Wassertemperatur teilweise nahe dem Siedepunkt. Meist blubbert das Wasser an die Erdoberfläche. Dabei werden oft Schwefel-Gase freigesetzt.

Onsen é o termo japonês para águais termais. Ao contrário do Ocidente onde são classificadas como termais as águas com temperatura superior a 21 graus, no Japão essa classificação é atribuída apenas a partir dos 25 graus.
