WALAPAI

The Hualapai (also spelled Walapai) are a tribe of Native Americans who live in the mountains of northwestern Arizona, United States. The name is derived from "hwal," the Yuman word for pine, "Hualapai" meaning "people of the tall pine". Their traditional territory is a 100 mile (160 km) stretch along the pine-clad southern side of the Grand Canyon with the tribal capital located at Peach Springs.

Die Walapai, auch Hualapai genannt, sind ein Yuma sprechender Indianerstamm aus der Hoka-Sprachfamilie und gehören zur Gruppe der Hochland-Yuma. Der Name stammt von der Eigenbezeichnung Hah-wah-lah-pai-yah und bedeutet Volk des hohen Pinienbaums. Ursprünglich bewohnten die Pai das Gebiet nördlich der Quechan am oberen Colorado River im heutigen Bundesstaat Arizona im Südwesten der USA. Lange bevor die Spanier den Südwesten betraten, zogen sie nach Osten in die Plateau-Region des nordöstlichen Arizona. Aus dieser Originalgruppe entstanden drei separate Stämme: Havasupai, Yavapai und Walapai. Wegen ihrer sich kaum von den benachbarten Tonto-Apachen unterscheidenden Lebensstils nannten die Spanier die Walapai auch oft Yuma-Apachen, da im Norden Mexikos das Wort "Apache" oft zur Bezeichnung für "feindliche, kriegerische, räuberische Indianer" wurde, ohne sprachliche, ethnische und kulturelle Differenzierung.
