Vulgata

The Vulgate is an early 5th century version of the Bible in Latin which is largely the result of the labors of Jerome, who was commissioned by Pope Damasus I in 382 to make a revision of the old Latin translations. Its Old Testament is the first Latin version translated directly from the Hebrew Tanakh rather than from the Greek Septuagint. It became the definitive and officially promulgated Latin version of the Bible of the Roman Catholic Church and ultimately took the name versio vulgata, which means simply "the published translation". There are 76 books in the Clementine edition of the Vulgate Bible: 46 in the Old Testament, 27 in the New Testament, and 3 in the Apocrypha.

Als Vulgata wird der lateinische Bibeltext bezeichnet, der seit der Spätantike die bis dahin gebräuchlichen, in Umfang und Qualität verschiedenen, älteren lateinischen Übersetzungen der Bibel (Vetus Latina) abgelöst hat.Der Ausdruck Vulgata (auf der zweiten Silbe zu betonen, von lat.: vulgatus, -a, -um = allgemein verbreitet) bezeichnet auch eine allgemein verbreitete und übliche Textfassung. Damit kann unter anderem eine populäre Bearbeitung eines literarischen Stoffes gemeint sein, etwa der Alexandergeschichte.

La Vulgata (leggi Vulgàta) è una traduzione della Bibbia in latino realizzata all'inizio del V secolo da Girolamo. Il nome è dovuto alla dicitura latina vulgata editio, 'edizione per il popolo', che richiama sia l'ampia diffusione che ottenne (in precedenza con Vulgata si indicava la traduzione della Settanta, che ebbe anch'essa notevole diffusione), sia lo stile non eccessivamente raffinato e retorico, più alla portata del popolo.
