Vorbis

Vorbis is a free and open source, lossy audio codec project headed by the Xiph.Org Foundation and intended to serve as a replacement for MP3. It is most commonly used in conjunction with the Ogg container and is therefore called Ogg Vorbis.Vorbis development began following a September 1998 letter from Fraunhofer Gesellschaft announcing plans to charge licensing fees for the MP3 audio format. Soon after, founder Christopher "Monty" Montgomery commenced work on the project and was assisted by a growing number of other developers. They continued refining the source code until a stable version 1.0 of the codec was released on July 19, 2002.

Es unterstützt bis zu 255 Kanäle mit variabler Bitrate und ist streamingfähig. Die zur Kodierung und Dekodierung benötigten Bibliotheken wurden unter einer BSD-artigen Lizenz veröffentlicht.

Ogg Vorbis potrafi obsłużyć do 255 kanałów i ponad 16-bitowy dźwięk w zakresie 6-48 kHz.Dane techniczne tych formatów należą do public domain. Biblioteki dystrybuuje się na prawach licencji z rodziny BSD, a narzędzia na zasadach GNU GPL. Vorbis è un algoritmo open source per la compressione audio digitale di tipo lossy, diretta antagonista di altri standard come MP3, VQF, AAC. A parità di qualità percepita, permette una maggiore compressione rispetto al formato MP3, ottenuta mediante avanzate ricerche di psicoacustica.Il suo sviluppo si deve soprattutto a Christopher Montgomery, fondatore della Xiph.Org Foundation (nota anche come Xiphophorous Foundation), che la porta dalla prima alpha release del settembre 1998 fino al rilascio ufficiale della versione 1.0 avvenuto nel luglio 2002.
