Virginia

The Commonwealth of Virginia (IPA: //) is a Southeastern state historically considered part of the Southern region of the United States of America. It is named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the Virgin Queen because she never married.The Virginia Colony was the first part of the Americas to be continuously inhabited by English (following the 1707 Acts of Union, British) colonists from its founding as a European colony up to the American Revolution. It included area explored by the 1584 expedition of Sir Walter Raleigh along the coast of North America, and at one time it also included Bermuda (or Virgineola). The Virginia Company of London became incorporated as a joint stock company by a proprietary charter drawn up on April 10, 1606. The charter granted lands stretching from approximately the 34th parallel (North Carolina) north to approximately the 45th parallel (New York) and from the Atlantic Ocean westward. The Third Charter of 1612 extended its boundaries far enough across the Atlantic to incorporate Bermuda, which the company had possessed since 1609. The commonwealth was one of the thirteen colonies that revolted against British rule in the American Revolution to form the United States of America.

La Virginie (Commonwealth of Virginia en anglais) est un État du Sud des États-Unis. Elle est bordée au nord par le Maryland (le District de Columbia étant situé entre les deux États, sur le Potomac), à l'est par la baie de Chesapeake et l'océan Atlantique, au sud par la Caroline du Nord et le Tennessee, à l'ouest par le Kentucky et la Virginie-Occidentale.

Nach über 150 Jahren als englischer Kolonie erlangte Virginia zusammen mit zwölf anderen Kolonien die Unabhängigkeit. 1788 war Virginia der zehnte Staat, der die Verfassung der USA ratifizierte. Während des US-Bürgerkrieges spalteten sich die nordwestlichen Bezirke ab, und wurden zum eigenständigen Bundesstaat West Virginia. Hauptstadt Virginias ist Richmond. Der Beiname Virginias ist: „Old Dominion“ - Altes Herrschaftsgebiet. Auch wird er "President's State" genannt, weil viele Präsidenten aus Virginia stammen.

Wirginia (ang. Virginia), albo Republika Wirginii (ang. Commonwealth of Virginia) – stan w USA na wybrzeżu Oceanu Atlantyckiego. Wirginia na północy graniczy ze stanami Wirginia Zachodnia i Maryland, oraz ze Dystryktem Kolumbii, na zachodzie ze stanem Kentucky, a na południu z Tennessee oraz z Karoliną Północną. La Virginia è uno stato degli USA. Trae origine da una delle Tredici Colonie, che si ribellarono al dominio britannico e, dopo la Rivoluzione Americana, dettero origine agli Stati Uniti d'America (1776).Viene generalmente considerato uno stato del Sud. Il suo nome ufficiale è Commonwealth of Virginia ed è uno dei quattro stati degli USA ad utilizzare la denominazione Commonwealth. Inoltre il suo nome trae origine dalla regina d'Inghilterra Elisabetta I figlia di Enrico VIII e di Anna Bolena, che era conosciuta come la 'Virgin Queen' per non essersi mai sposata. Gli attuali stati di Kentucky e Virginia Occidentale erano parte della Virginia all'epoca della fondazione degli Stati Uniti, ma il primo venne ammesso nell'Unione come stato separato nel 1792, mentre il secondo si separò dalla Virginia durante la guerra di secessione americana.
