Vinland

Vinland (Old Norse: Plain land ) was the name given to an area of North America by the norseman Leif Eiríksson, about the year (CE) 1000. At that time, the word "" meant not wine, but plain or pasture. These homonyms are often confused.In 1960 archaeological evidence of Norse settlement in North America was found at L'Anse aux Meadows on the northern part of the island of Newfoundland, in what is now the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Although this proved conclusively the Vikings' pre-Columbian discovery of North America, whether this exact site is the Vinland of the Norse accounts is still a subject of debate. It must be recognised that the Vikings did not perceive the exploration and settlement of Greenland and Vinland as any different from that of founding Iceland. It was merely an extension of their homeland, and notions of a different world only surfaced upon meeting the natives, noticeably different from the Irish monks in Iceland, its first inhabitants.

Vinland est le nom donné par le marin islandais Leif Ericson au territoire qu’il découvrit autour de l’an 1000. Des fouilles ont permis de retrouver des traces de la présence des Vikings à L'Anse aux Meadows à Terre-Neuve, Canada. On continue à débattre s’il s’agit là du Vinland d’Ericson, dont les spécialistes ont situé les divers emplacements possibles sur une aire géographique allant du Labrador à la Floride... Les Vikings n’ont pas perçu, à l’origine, l’exploration et la colonisation du Groenland et du Vinland comme différent de la fondation et de la colonisation de l’Islande. Il ne s’agissait pour eux que de prolonger leur territoire. Il faudra la rencontre des autochtones amérindiens, très différents des moines d’Irlande, pour que s’impose à eux la notion de nouveau monde.

Vinland (früher auch Winland, oftmals als Weinland gedeutet) war der Name, den der aus Grönland bzw. Island stammende Wikinger Leif Eriksson einem Teil Nordamerikas um das Jahr 1000 gab, als er als vermutlich erster Europäer dort landete. Dem „Skálholtsbók“ zufolge geschah es auf der Rückreise von Europa, dass Leif etwas vom Kurs abkam und auf der anderen Seite der Davisstraße Land entdeckte. In der „Flateyjarbók“ dagegen heißt es, dass er zuerst nach Grönland auf den Hof seines Vaters zurückkehrte und dann losfuhr, um nach einem flachen und bewaldeten Land zu suchen, das Bjarni Herjolfsson von seinem Schiff aus weit draußen auf der Davisstraße gesichtet hatte.

Winlandia (prawdopodobnie Kraj Łąk) to nazwa nadana odkrytej w roku 1000 przez Wikinga Bjarniego Herjólfssona, zaś zasiedlonej przez Leifa Erikssona części Ameryki Północnej. Odkryty wówczas fragment lądu jest dziś różnie identyfikowany; przypuszczalnie była to Nowa Fundlandia.

Vinland (Winland terra del vino o landa delle viti) è il nome che i vichinghi diedero alla porzione di America settentrionale nota come Terranova (Terre-Neuve o Newfoundland), che scoprirono durante una spedizione. La terra era piena di viti selvatiche e di piante e animali da loro mai visti.I coloni fondarono lì dei piccoli stanziamenti che durarono però poco, perché probabilmente si scontrarono con i nativi ed i loro usi diversi. Tennero però dei piccoli commerci e ci fu anche qualche matrimonio misto.Abbiamo alcuni scavi archeologici nel Labrador che ci confermano quello che anche alcuni codici descrivono sul Vinland. Il primo che ne parlò fu Adamo da Brema che ne scrisse nelle Gesta Hammaburgensis Ecclesiae Pontificum. Altra importante fonte è la Saga dei Groenlandesi.
