Vila Real de Santo António (
pron. , often pronounced as []) is a both a municipality and the municipal seat in
Algarve,
Portugal. The area of the municipality is 57,53 km² and the population was 17, 956 inhabitants (2001). The town is located next to the
Guadiana river and before the building of the Guadiana International Bridge used to be the easiest way to access Portugal from
Andalusia (by car via ferry). Its trade has steadily diminished since then.
