Vietnam War
The Vietnam War, also known as the Second
Indochina War, the American War in Vietnam and the Vietnam Conflict, occurred from
1959 to
April 30,
1975, concluding with the
North Vietnamese military victory after more than 15 years. Over 1.4 million military personal were killed in the war (approximately 6% were members of the United States armed forces), while estimates of civilian fatalities range from 2 to 5.1 million. The war was fought between the
Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) and the
United States-supported
Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam). The war ended with the defeat of the Southern and American forces, and unification of Vietnam under the
communist government of the North.

La guerre du Viêt Nam (aussi appelée deuxième guerre d'
Indochine) est une guerre qui a opposé de
1959 à
1975, d'une part la
République démocratique du Viêt Nam (ou Nord-Vietnam) et son
armée populaire vietnamienne - soutenue matériellement par le
bloc de l'Est et la
Chine - et le
Front national pour la libération du Viêt Nam (ou Viet Cong), face à, d'autre part, la
République du Viêt Nam (ou Sud-Vietnam), militairement soutenue par l'armée des
États-Unis à partir de
1964, à la suite des
incidents du golfe du Tonkin appuyé par plusieurs alliés (
Australie,
Corée du Sud,

Philippines).
