It is a recording and playing standard developed by Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) and launched in September 1976, with The Young Teacher being the first movie to be released.By the 1990s, VHS became a standard format for consumer recording and viewing, after competing in a fierce format war with Sony Corporation's Betamax and, to a much lesser extent, Philips' Video 2000, MCA's Laserdisc and RCA's Capacitance Electronic Disc. VHS initially offered a longer playing time than the Betamax system, and it also had the advantage of a far less complex tape transport mechanism. Although VHS and Betamax were competing formats, several of VHS' critical technologies are licensed from Sony. Early VHS machines could rewind and fast forward the tape considerably faster than a Betamax VCR since they unthreaded the tape from the playback heads before commencing any high-speed winding. Most newer VHS machines do not perform this unthreading step, as head-tape contact is no longer an impediment to fast winding, owing to improved engineering.

L’expression anglaise (système vidéo domestique), plus connue sous son acronyme VHS, désigne un standard d’enregistrement de signaux vidéos sur bande magnétique de qui a été mis au point par JVC à la fin des années 1970. Sa diffusion grand public fut annoncée en 1976. La durée d’enregistrement des cassettes commercialisées dans ce format peut être de 2 heures (cassette E-120), 3 heures (E-180), 4 heures (E-240) et même 5 heures (E-300). Il faut remarquer que le défilement de la bande est plus rapide au format NTSC américain. De ce fait, la durée des cassettes vendues aux États-Unis est plus faible, entre (T-120) et (T-210). Mais certains magnétoscopes au format NTSC peuvent enregistrer et lire à demi vitesse (SP), ou même au tiers de la vitesse de défilement (EP ou SLP) de la bande, multipliant ainsi par 2 ou par 3 la durée (jusque avec une T-210). En Europe, la durée peut être portée par le même système jusqu’à avec une cassette E-240 ( avec une E-300). Cette augmentation de durée se fait évidemment au détriment de la qualité.

VHS setzte sich als Standard für private Video-Magnetbandaufzeichnungen durch und wurde – trotz Entwicklung besserer analoger Systeme – erst durch ein digitales System abgelöst. Im Gegensatz zu vielen konkurrierenden Systemen nutzt VHS einen „M“-Lademechanismus, der für die kontinuierliche Signalübertragung zwei Köpfe notwendig macht, jedoch kompaktere Geräte erlaubt.

VHS è l'acronimo inglese di Video Home System (o anche Video Home Service) ed è uno standard per la registrazione e la riproduzione di filmati analogici mediante videoregistratore (VRC).Venne sviluppato dalla JVC (con l'utilizzo di alcune tecnologie concesse in licenza dalla Sony) e lanciato sul mercato nell'autunno del 1976.VHS in origine era l'abbreviazione di Vertical Helical Scan (scansione verticale elicoidale) in base alla tecnica utilizzata. Alcune fonti riportano che il nome in origine significava Victor Helical Scan.
