Vichy France
Vichy France, or the Vichy regime, was the government of
France from July 1940 to August 1944. It succeeded the
Third Republic. The "French state" (L'État Français), as it called itself in contrast with the "French Republic", was proclaimed by
Marshal Philippe Pétain, following the
military defeat of France by
Nazi Germany during
World War II, and the vote by the
National Assembly on
July 10,
1940, to grant extraordinary powers to Pétain, who held the title of "
President of the Council" instead of
President of France. Pétain headed the
reactionary program of the so-called "
Révolution nationale", aimed at "regenerating the Nation."

La France sous le régime de Vichy traite de l'histoire de la
France entre 1940 et 1944 lorsque le pays est sous domination allemande. Les Allemands, qui occupent d'abord la partie nord, et à partir de novembre 1942, le pays tout entier, laissent l'administration française sous l'autorité d'un gouvernement français dirigé par le
maréchal Pétain promu
président du Conseil par
Albert Lebrun et installé à
Vichy. Dès
juin 1940, Pétain, qui n'a pas le statut de
président de la République, met en œuvre une
Collaboration avec les
Nazis. Celle-ci prendra plusieurs formes au cours de la
guerre, dont les arrestations de
Résistants et de francs-maçons, ainsi que les rafles de
Juifs.
