Mount Vesuvius (, ) is a stratovolcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, about east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other major active volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on the islands of Sicily and Stromboli respectively.

Le mont Vésuve (monte Vesuvio en italien, Vesuvius mons en latin) est un volcan italien d'une hauteur de mètres, bordant la baie de Naples, à l'est de la ville. Wezuwiusz (łac. Vesuvius, wł. Vesuvio) - jeden z najbardziej znanych wulkanów w lądowej części Europy. Wezuwiusz jest także jednym z 5 najniebezpieczniejszych wulkanów świata. Swoje początki datuje na około 16 tys. lat temu. Wezuwiusz jest jak gdyby złączony z Monte Somma (Somma to pradawny wygasły już wulkan jak się przypuszcza to właśnie po zawaleniu się krateru Sommy wytworzyła się działalność sejsmiczna Wezuwiusza). Najbardziej wzmożonym okresem aktywności wulkanu były lata 1631-1872. Według ostatnich pomiarów, jego wysokość wynosi 1281 m n.p.m., głębokość krateru - 230 m, średnica - 550-650 m. Dzisiejszy stożek znajduje się na kalderze utworzonej podczas wybuchu z 79 r. Pomiędzy Ercolano i Torre del Greco na Valle del Salvatore znajduje się najstarsze obserwatorium wulkaniczne (1841) położone na wysokości 609 m n.p.m. Wezuwiusz zaliczany jest do stratowulkanów.
