In tetrapod anatomy the trachea, or windpipe, is a tube that connects the pharynx or larynx to the lungs, allowing the passage of air. It is lined with pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium cells with goblet cells that produce mucus. This mucus lines the cells of the trachea to trap inhaled foreign particles that the cilia then waft upward toward the larynx and then the pharynx where it can be either swallowed into the stomach or expelled as phlegm.

Die Luftröhre oder fachsprachlich die Trachea (griechisch τραχεία, trachía ursprünglich „der rauhe Schlauch“, „die grobe Arterie“ – im Gegensatz zu den feineren blutführenden Gefäßen) ist bei Wirbeltieren die Verbindung zwischen den äußeren Atmungsorganen (Nasenhöhle, Rachenraum, Blasloch bei Walen) und dem Bronchialsystem der Lunge.

La trachée est le tuyau élastique (fibro-cartilagineux) qui, chez les vertébrés, permet lors de l'inspiration, de conduire l'air depuis le larynx dans les bronches. Elle permet également de faire sortir l'air riche en dioxyde de carbone lors de l'expiration. Zone de conduction dans les voies aériennes inférieures.

Luftstrupen, trachea, är ett omkring tio centimeter långt rör som utgör förbindelsen mellan struphuvudet (larynx) och lungornas två primärbronker, och som möjliggör att luft passerar till och från lungorna. Luftstrupen har 15-20 hästskoformade broskringar som omsluter röret, vilka förhindrar detta från att stängas. Mikroskopiskt är den inre ytan täckt av en slemhinna som består av ett epitel, vars celler har cilier med förmågan att transportera partiklar mot svalget (farynx).

Tchawica (łac. trachea) - narząd układu oddechowego, sprężysta cewa, stanowiąca przedłużenie krtani i zapewniająca dopływ powietrza do płuc. Rozpoczyna się na wysokości kręgu szyjnego C6-C7, kończy zaś na wysokości kręgu piersiowego Th4-Th5. U swego dolnego końca, tchawica dzieli się na oskrzela główne prawe i lewe (łac. bronchus principalis dexter et sinister), pod kątem otwartym ku dołowi. Miejsce tego podziału tworzy rozdwojenie tchawicy (bifurcatio tracheae). W tym miejscu znajduje się także ostroga tchawicy (carina tracheae) rozdzielająca powietrze do płuc.
