VIGNETTE

The word Vignette, from the same root as vine, originally referred to a decorative border in a book. Later, the word also came to be used for a photographic portrait which is clear in the center, and fades off at the edges, and also short descriptive literature focusing on a particular moment or person. Le mot vignette comporte deux significations principales: - Dans son premier sens, le plus ancien, il était utilisé pour désigner tout motif ornemental illustrant les pages de textes imprimés, et notamment ceux placées en tête de ces pages. Par extension, ce terme à parfois été appliqué à toute illustration d'un livre dessinée ou gravée. Cette désignation qui dérive du mot "vigne", provenait du fait que, souvent dans le passé, ces motifs décoratifs incluaient des ceps ou des pampres.

Das Wort Vignette leitet sich vom französischen «vigne» für Weinrebe ab. Es bezeichnet ursprünglich eine Randverzierung im Buchschmuck. Hier bezeichnet es Weinranken, die ornamentartig den Text oder den Titel eines Buches verzierten (Titelvignette). Auch kleinere Zeichnungen oder Bilder, die einem gedruckten Text begleitend beigestellt werden und nicht als Karikatur, Cartoon o. ä. bezeichnet werden sollen, werden neutral als Vignette bezeichnet.
