Uthman Ibn Affan
For other uses of the name, see Uthman (name). ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān () (c. 580 - July 17 656) was a sahaba (companion) and son in law of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. An early convert to Islam, he played a major role in early Islamic history, most notably as the third Caliph of the Rashidun Empire (644 to death) and the compilation of the Qur'an. Revered by Sunni Muslims as one of the Rashidun (four rightly guided Caliphs) of Islam, he is sometimes criticized by the Shia Muslims.

Uthman
Uthman was the third of the Rightly Guided Caliphs , and ruled from the death of Umar in 644 to 656. Under Uthman, the Quran was edited into its final form. Uthman was a controversial appointment as Caliph, since his extended family--the Umayyads--had been fierce opponents of Mohammed. He was assassinated in 656.
