Uriah is located in
Monroe County in the southern U.S. state of
Alabama. The local school; J.U. Blacksher was named after one of the founding fathers of this sleepy little town. It's unofficial motto is: "If you blink. You might miss it." (In reference to the small size of the town.) Hwy 21 services Uriah as does Hwy 59. Church burnings to the south of this town were started by students that attended the towns High School--J.U. Blacksher H.S. Among the convicted arsonists were: Brandy Boone. Alan Odom. Michael Woods. Jeremy Boone. Alan Odom was the only one of these students involved to be charged with a Hate crime. Uriah is home to an annual festival called The Cotton Patch Festival. Various talents and arts and crafts are showcased during the Festival. The Festival was started by and still currently organized by Patricia Mcullers a long time veteran of J.U. Blacksher H.S. The 2007 Cotton Patch Festival Coincided with Alabama EMA's Staged School Shooting. The Staged event was to help determine response times among other factors. While officials would like to call the event a great success 6 Monroe county sheriff deputies were "injured" in the staged event due to lack of information of 2 other "suspects" inside the school. Response time was a dissapointment as well because a life flight helicopter that should have landed at the school in Uriah...located at the southern portion of Monroe County somehow landed instead in Monroeville...located in the northern region of Monroe County.
