Urdu (; Urdu: , ) is a register of the Hindi-Urdu language that is identified with Muslims in South Asia. Urdu is the national language and lingua franca of Pakistan. It is also widely spoken in India, where it is one of the 22 scheduled languages and an official language of five states. Based on the Khariboli dialect of Delhi, Urdu is developed under the influence of Persian, Arabic, and Turkic over the course of almost 900 years. It began to take shape in what is now Uttar Pradesh, India during the Delhi Sultanate (1206–1527), and continued to develop under the Mughal Empire (1526–1858). Urdu is mutually intelligible with Standard Hindi (or Hindi-Urdu) spoken in India. Both languages share the same Indic base and are so similar in phonology and grammar that they appear to be one language. The combined population of Hindi and Urdu speakers is the fourth largest in the world.

Urdu ist eine  indogermanische Sprache, die zur Zeit des Sultanats von Delhi und des Mogulreichs auf dem südasiatischen Subkontinent (Pakistan, Indien) entstand. Schwerpunkt der Entwicklung war die Herrschaft Akbars (1556–1605), in dessen riesigen Wanderhöfen und -feldlagern (bis zu 70 km Umfang) sich ein Vielvölkergemisch aus muslimischen Persern (Persisch, in der Mogulzeit 300 Jahre lang Amtssprache in Nordindien), Nordindern (Panjabi, Hindi), Mongolen (Mongolisch), Türken (Türkisch), etc. bewegte, aus deren Sprachen sich das Urdu erst als Mischsprache entwickelte und schließlich zu einer eigenen Sprache formte.

L'ourdou ou urdu (1947 ; nom local : urdū / اردو) est une langue indienne appartenant au groupe indo-iranien de la famille des langues indo-européennes. Il est parlé au Pakistan, dont il est la langue officielle, ainsi que dans le nord de l'Inde, où il est également une langue officielle reconnue par la Constitution. Environ 160 millions de personnes utilisent l'ourdou, dont 60 à 80 millions qui l'utilisent comme première langue.

Urdu (förr: Hindustani) är ett indoeuropeiskt språk som främst talas i Pakistan och Indien. Det är ett av två officiella språk i Pakistan, och ett av 23 officiella språk i Indien. Strikt språkvetenskapligt är urdu och hindi dialekter av samma språk. De två språken använder dock olika alfabet.
