Urban agglomeration

In the study of human settlements, an agglomeration is an extended city or town area comprising the built-up area of a central place (usually a municipality) and any suburbs linked by continuous urban area. In France, INSEE the French Statistical Institute, translate it as "Unité urbaine" which means continuous urbanized area. However, because of differences in definitions of what does and does not constitute an "agglomeration", as well as variations and limitations in statistical or geographical methodology, it can be problematic to compare different agglomerations around the world. It may not be clear, for instance, whether an area should be considered to be a satellite and part of an agglomeration, or a distinct entity in itself.

Une agglomération est un ensemble urbain composé en général de plusieurs villes interconnectées qui gèrent leurs projets en commun (transports, déchets, projets de réhabilitation de quartiers, etc.). Une agglomération est, au sens large, définie comme une ville munie de ses banlieues : une « toile urbaine ».

Eine Metropolregion (in der Schweiz auch Metropolitanregion) ist eine stark verdichtete Großstadtregion von hoher internationaler Bedeutung. Metropolregionen werden als Motoren der sozialen, gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung eines Landes betrachtet.Europäische Metropolregionen besitzen zudem auf Europa bezogen Schlüsselrollen für eben diese Entwicklung. Sie werden seit 1995 auf deutscher Bundesebene definiert, ausgewiesen und gefördert.Im Gegensatz zu einer Agglomeration, die aus einer Kernstadt und ihrem suburbanen, dicht bebauten Vorortbereich (Speckgürtel) besteht, ist der Begriff der Metropolregion weiter gefasst und schließt auch große ländliche Gebiete mit ein, die mit den Oberzentren der Region durch wirtschaftliche Verflechtungen oder Pendlerströme in enger Verbindung stehen.

Aglomeracja (z łac. agglomeratio – nagromadzenie) – w urbanistyce jest to obszar o intensywnej zabudowie, charakteryzujący się również dużym zagęszczeniem ludności przebywającej na danym terenie periodycznie (np. w ciągu dnia) lub stale. Aglomeracje charakteryzują się dużym przepływem osób i towarów oraz znaczną wymianą usług. W brzmieniu bardziej potocznym aglomeracja jest skupiskiem sąsiadujących ze sobą miast i wsi, które stanowią wspólny organizm, poprzez zintegrowanie lub uzupełnianie się rozmaitych form infrastruktury tych miejscowości oraz wzajemne wykorzystywanie potencjałów, którymi te miejscowości dysponują.

L'area metropolitana è una zona circostante un'agglomerazione (o una conurbazione) che per i vari servizi dipende dalla città centrale (metropoli) ed è caratterizzata dall'integrazione delle funzioni e dall'intensità dei rapporti che si realizzano al suo interno. Le aree metropolitane italiane sono quelle di Milano, Roma, Napoli, Torino, Genova, Firenze ,  Palermo, Bari, Bologna, Venezia e Catania.
