Ural (region)

Ural is a geographical region around the Ural Mountains, mostly within Russia but also including a part of northwestern Kazakstan. This is a historical, not an official entity, with the boundaries overlapping its western Volga and eastern Siberia neighbor regions. At points in time, parts of the Urals were considered a gateway to Siberia, if not Siberia itself, or were combined with the Volga administrative divisions. At present time, there are two official namesake entities, the Urals Federal District and the Urals economic region. While the latter follows the historical boundaries reasonably well, the former is purely a product of an imposed political will, as the District omits western Urals and includes western Siberia instead.

Het Oeralgebied of Oeral (Russisch: Ура́л) is de geografische regio rond het gelijknamige gebergte, de Oeral. Het ligt in de Russische deelgebieden Basjkirostan, Komi, Chanto-Mansië, Jamalië, Nenetsië, oblast Orenburg, kraj Perm, oblast Sverdlovsk en oblast Tsjeljabinsk. Ten westen ligt het Russisch Laagland en ten oosten het West-Siberisch Laagland.

Основной частью этого региона является Уральская горная система.Урал находится на стыке Европы и Азии и является границей между этими регионами. Каменный пояс Урала и примыкающие к нему возвышенные равнины Приуралья простираются от берегов Северного Ледовитого океана на севере до полупустынных районов Казахстана на юге в виде 100—400 км полосы: на протяжении более 2500 км они разделяют Восточно-Европейскую и Западно-Сибирскую равнины .
