United States Senate
The United States Senate is one of the two chambers of the bicameral United States Congress, the other being the House of Representatives. It is known informally as the "upper house."In the Senate, each state is represented by two members, in accordance with the New Jersey Plan, proposed by William Paterson reached at the Philadelphia Convention of 1787. The Senate's membership is therefore based on the equal representation of each state, regardless of population. The nine most populous states, with just over half of the total US population, together elect only eighteen of the hundred senators, while the smallest nine states, with about 2.5% of the total US population, also elect 18 senators. For comparison, a Wyoming resident's vote is worth about 71 California residents' votes.
