United States Atomic Energy Commission

Almost a year after World War II ended, the United States Congress established the United States Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to foster and control the peace time development of atomic science and technology. President Harry S. Truman signed the Atomic Energy Act (also known as the McMahon Act) on August 1, 1946, transferring the control of atomic energy from military to civilian hands. This action reflected America's postwar optimism, with Congress declaring that atomic energy should be employed not only in the form of nuclear weapons for the nation's defense, but also to promote world peace, improve the public welfare and strengthen free competition in private enterprise. The signing was the culmination of long months of intensive debate among politicians, military planners and atomic scientists over the fate of this new energy source. President Truman appointed David Lilienthal as the first Chairman of the AEC.

La Commission de l'énergie atomique des États-Unis ( United States Atomic Energy Commission, abrégé en AEC) est un organisme fédéral américain établi dans le but de promouvoir et de contrôler le développement pacifique des applications atomiques et nucléaires tant au niveau scientifique que technique. Environ un an après la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le Président des États-Unis Harry S. Truman, en accord avec le Congrès des États-Unis, a signé le Atomic Energy Act of 1946 (aussi connu comme le McMahon Act) le 1 août 1946, lequel transférait le contrôle de l'énergie atomique des militaires aux civils à partir du 1 janvier 1947.

Die Atomic Energy Commission wurde 1946 gegründet und war bis 1974 Ansprechpartner für die Forschung und Entwicklung der Nutzbarmachung atomarer Energie (hauptsächlich im Bezug auf Kernwaffen). In Friedenszeiten eher als Kontroll- und Regulierungsbehörde zu verstehen.

Atomic Energy Commission, AEC, var en federal organisation i USA. Organisationen inrättades 1946 för att finansiera, planera och kontrollera utvecklingen av kärnvapen samt kärnenergi för fredligt bruk. År 1974 upplöstes organisationen och ersattes av Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) och Nuclear Regularity Commission (NRC).
