Unicast

In computer networks, unicast is the sending of information packets to a single destination. "Unicast" is derived from the word broadcast, as unicast is the extreme opposite of broadcasting. In computer networking, multicasting is used to regain some of the efficiencies of broadcasting.These terms are also synonymous with streaming content providers' services. Unicast servers provide a stream to a single user at a time, while multicast servers can support a larger audience by serving content simultaneously to multiple users.Unicast is also the name of a Rich Media Company which was acquired by Viewpoint Corporation in 2003.

Der Begriff Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindung (Unicast) wird bei der Klassifikation von Methoden der Netzwerkkommunikation verwendet. Grundsätzlich spricht man bei allen direkten Verbindungen zwischen zwei Netzwerkteilnehmern von Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindungen. Der Begriff wird jedoch in zwei verschiedenen Zusammenhängen gebraucht: Unterschiede Punkt-zu-Punkt und Ende-zu-Ende Punkt-zu-Punkt-Verbindungen sind Verbindungen ohne vermittelnde Zwischenstation. Darunter fällt die Kommunikation in den unteren Netzwerkschichten (1–3 im OSI-Modell). Damit grenzen sich solche Verbindungen von den so genannten Ende-zu-Ende-Verbindungen auf den höheren Netzwerkschichten (4–7 im OSI-Modell) ab. Bei der Ende-zu-Ende-Kommunikation wird die Weitervermittlung durch Zwischenstation genutzt. Man spricht dabei auch von Multihop-Kommunikation.

Unicast - to rodzaj transmisji, w której dokładnie jeden punkt wysyła pakiety do dokładnie jednego punktu - istnieje tylko jeden nadawca i tylko jeden odbiorca. Wszystkie karty Ethernet posiadają zaimplementowany ten rodzaj transmisji. Oparte na nim są podstawowe protokoły takie jak TCP, HTTP, SMTP, FTP i telnet i częściowo ARP, który pierwsze żądanie wysyła zawsze korzystając z transmisji broadcast.
