En phonétique, le processus d’Umlaut (de l’allemand -, + , ), ou métaphonie (terme grec de même sens ; ne pas confondre avec le paronyme métatonie) ou encore inflexion, désigne le changement de timbre d’une voyelle à la suite de l’amuïssement d’une autre voyelle dans une syllabe suivante. La voyelle altérée garde pour ainsi dire une trace de la voyelle disparue en récupérant une de ses caractéristiques. C’est un type complexe de dilation.

Nella linguistica il termine metafonesi o metafonia o Umlaut, indica un fenomeno fonologico che consiste nella modificazione del suono di una vocale per l'influsso di un'altra vocale, in un processo di assimilazione. La parola italiana è un calco con materiale greco dal corrispondente termine tedesco (ted. um = gr. metà "al di là"; ted. Laut = gr. pho:né "suono").
