Ujjain

Ujjain (Hindi:उज्जैन) (also known as Ujain, Ujjayini, Avanti, Avantikapuri) is an ancient city of central India, in the Malwa region of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, on the eastern bank of the Kshipra River. It is the administrative centre of Ujjain District and Ujjain Division. In ancient times the city was called Ujjayini. As per epic Mahabharata Ujjayani was the capital of Avanti Kingdom. It has been the first meridian of longitude for Hindu geographers since the 4th century BCE. It is one of the seven sacred cities of the Hindus, and the Kumbh Mela religious festival is held there every twelve years. It is also home to Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines to the god Shiva.

Ujjain est une ville de l'Inde centrale située dans la region de Malwa du Madhya Pradesh, sur la rive droite de la Shiprâ, un des affluents les plus occidentaux du Gange. C'est l'une des plus anciennes villes du pays et elle fait partie des villes saintes de l'Inde. Il s'y déroule chaque douze ans une Kumbhamelâ (la dernière en 2004). La ville est connue sous différents noms, dont Avantî, Visyhâlâ, Padmâvatî, Bhoghavatî, Hyranyavatî, Ptolémée l'appelle Ozênê. Elle a été un centre important d'études astronomiques et mathématiques.

Ujjain ist eine von Indiens sieben heiligen Städten. Sie liegt 55 km nördlich von Indore an den Ufern des Flusses Shipra, im Bundesstaat Madhya Pradesh. Wie in Haridwar, Nashik und Prayag (Allahabad) findet hier alle zwölf Jahre Indiens größte religiöse Versammlung statt: die Kumbh Mela.
