It is the historic capital of the former kingdom of Mewar, and the administrative headquarters of Udaipur District. It is also known as the "City of Lakes".

La ville indienne d'Udaipur (उदयपुर), entourée par les lacs Pichola, Fateh Sagar et Swaroop Sagar est l'une des plus belles villes du Rajasthan, à l’atmosphère très agréable de ville de province. Elle a servi de décor au James Bond Octopussy et au Tigre du Bengale de Fritz Lang. Elle est citée comme lieu de naissance, la ménagerie du râja plus précisement, de la panthère Bagheera dans le Livre de la jungle de Rudyard Kipling, sous l’orthographe d'Oodeypore.

Udaipur (उदयपुर) is een stad in de  Indiase deelstaat Rajasthan. Het is gelegen in het gelijknamige district Udaipur en heeft 389.317 inwoners (2001). De stad staat vooral bekend als een romantische stad, het Venetië van Rajasthan. Udaipur is gelegen in een vallei op een hoogte van 600 meter boven de zeespiegel. De stad wordt omringd door drie meren, het Picholameer, het Fateh Sagarmeer en het Swaroop Sagarmeer. Deze voorzien de stad van het broodnodige water. De stad is bekend vanwege de opnamen in en rond de stad en in het Picholameer voor de James Bond film Octopussy. Ook de klassiekers The Indian Tomb en The Tiger of Eschnapur van Fritz Lang zijn eind jaren 50 in de stad geschoten.
