Ur was an ancient city in southern Mesopotamia, located near the mouth (at the time) of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers on the Persian Gulf and close to Eridu. It is considered to be one of the earliest known civilizations in world history. Because of marine regression, the remains are now well inland in present-day Iraq, south of the Euphrates on its right bank, and named Tell el-Mukayyar , near the city of Nasiriyah south of Baghdad.

Der Landkreis Uecker-Randow ist ein Landkreis im Südosten des Bundeslandes Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Nachbarkreise sind im Süden der brandenburgische Landkreis Uckermark, im Westen der Landkreis Mecklenburg-Strelitz und im Nordwesten der Landkreis Ostvorpommern. Im Norden des Landkreises befindet sich das Stettiner Haff und im Osten grenzt er an den polnischen Landkreis Police.

Ur ist eine der ältesten sumerischen Stadtgründungen und altes Zentrum in Mesopotamien (Zweistromland, im heutigen Irak) und eine bedeutende archäologische Ausgrabungsstätte. Eine Zikkurat des Mondgottes Nanna wurde in Ur erbaut. Die Anfänge der Stadt reichen bis ca. 4000 v. Chr. zurück.

Ur to starożytne miasto-państwo założone w południowej Mezopotamii przez Sumerów, jeden z najważniejszych ośrodków kultury sumeryjskiej, z którego pochodził Abraham. W czasach starożytnych Ur znajdowało się u ujścia Tygrysu i Eufratu do morza. W ciągu kilku tysięcy lat gromadzenie się osadowego materiału w delcie tych rzek sprawiło, że miejsce to jest znacznie oddalone od morza. Obecnie miejsce, gdzie znajdowało się Ur, leży w południowym Iraku, około 18 km na południowy zachód od miasta An-Nasirija i nazywa się Tall al-Mukajjar.
