United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
Headquartered in GenevaSwitzerland, the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) (established December 141950) protects and supports refugees at the request of a government or the United Nations and assists in their return or resettlement. Most Palestinian refugees - those in the West BankGaza StripLebanonSyria, and Jordan - do not come within the responsibility of the UNHCR, but instead come under the older body UNRWA. But, Palestinian refugees outside of UNRWA's area of operations do fall under UNHCR's mandate.

Pursuant to a decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) was established as of 1 January 1951. According to the Statute of the Office the High Commissioner is called upon — inter alia — to provide international protection, under the auspices of the United Nations, to refugees falling within the competence of the Office.
