The United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq was formally established on 14 August 2003. and is associated with the Multinational force in Iraq.Its mandate operates through a Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in Iraq. The first such representative was Sérgio Vieira de Mello who was assassinated at the United Nations Headquarters by a car bomb on 19 August 2003.The current mandate has been extended to August 2008. One of its tasks is to implement the International Compact with Iraq.

La Misión de Asistencia de las Naciones Unidas para Iraq (UNAMI, por sus siglas en inglés) fue establecida el 14 de agosto de 2003 mediante la resolución n° 1.500 del Consejo de Seguridad de la ONU. Está asociada con la Coalición multinacional en Iraq.Su mandato opera a través de un Representante Especial del Secretario General de la ONU en Iraq. El primer representante fue el brasileño Sérgio Vieira de Mello, asesinado en la sede de Naciones Unidas en Bagdad por un carro-bomba el 19 de agosto de 2003. Ashraf Qazi, paquistaní, ocupó su lugar desde el 14 de julio de 2004, y el actual representante es el ítalo-sueco Staffan de Mistura, que asumió el cargo el 13 de noviembre de 2007.
