The United Nations (UN) is an international organization whose stated aims are to facilitate cooperation in international law, international security, economic development, social progress and human rights issues. The United Nations was founded in 1945 to replace the League of Nations, in the hope that it would intervene in conflicts between nations and thereby avoid war. The organization began with fifty countries signing the United Nations Charter. The organization's structure still reflects in some ways the circumstances of its founding. The five permanent members of the UN Security Council, each of which has veto power on any Security Council resolution, are the main victors of World War II or their successor states (alphabetical order): the People's Republic of China (which replaced the Republic of China in 1971); France; Russia (which replaced the Soviet Union in 1991); the United Kingdom; and the United States.

Die Union für ein Europa der Nationen (UEN) ist eine Fraktion im Europäischen Parlament. Sie umfasst Mitglieder nationalkonservativer und euroskeptischer Parteien, die zwar nicht für den Austritt ihres Landes aus der EU sind, jedoch auf Souveränität ihrer Länder bestehen. Sie besteht aus sieben Ländern und ist das neue Produkt der Fusion zwischen der 'Union für Europa' und der 'Fraktion der Unabhängigen für das Europa der Nationen'. Ihr verbunden ist die europäische Partei Allianz für ein Europa der Nationen. Mit momentan 41 Abgeordneten ist sie die zweitkleinste Fraktion im Europäischen Parlament vor der ebenfalls EU-skeptischen Fraktion Unabhängigkeit und Demokratie mit derzeit 24 Abgeordneten.

Il 3 luglio 2006 gli stati membri diventano 192. (vedi anche Lista degli stati membri delle Nazioni Unite) Possono far parte delle Nazioni Unite tutti i paesi che accettano gli obblighi imposti dallo statuto delle Nazioni Unite e che vengono considerati in grado di far fronte a questi obblighi. L'Assemblea generale delle Nazioni Unite decide l'ammissione in base alle raccomandazioni del Consiglio di sicurezza.
