Advanced Technology Attachment (ATA) is a standard interface for connecting storage devices such as hard disks and CD-ROM drives inside personal computers.The standard is maintained by X3/INCITS committee T13. Many synonyms and near-synonyms for ATA exist, including abbreviations such as IDE and ATAPI. Also, with the market introduction of Serial ATA in 2003, the original ATA was retroactively renamed Parallel ATA (PATA).In line with the original naming, this article covers only Parallel ATA.

ATA/ATAPI (Advanced Technology Attachment with Packet Interface) ist eine Schnittstelle zwischen Massenspeicher und Computer. ATA/ATAPI wurde hauptsächlich verwendet, um Festplatten bzw. Laufwerke für CD-ROM und DVD mit Computern zu verbinden. Bei neuen Systemen ist sie heutzutage zum größten Teil durch SATA abgelöst.

UDMA (Abkürzung für Ultra-Direct Memory Access) ist ein Zugriffsprotokoll des ATA-Standards, das festlegt, wie Daten zwischen einer ATA-Festplatte und dem passenden Controller auf der Hauptplatine übertragen werden. Es handelt sich um ein Nachfolgeprotokoll des PIO-Modus.UDMA wie auch DMA ermöglichen es der Festplatte, Daten unter Verwendung eines DMA-Controllers direkt vom bzw. zum Arbeitsspeicher zu übertragen, ohne dabei den Prozessor zu benutzen. Dadurch wird das System entlastet. Die verschiedenen Standards sind UDMA33, UDMA66, UDMA100, UDMA133 usw. und geben die theoretisch zu erreichende Datentransferrate in MB/s an.

Advanced Technology Attachment o, come comunemente abbreviato, ATA, consiste in un'interfaccia standard per la connessione di dispositivi di memorizzazione quali hard disk e unità CD-ROM all'interno dei personal computer. Sono molti i termini utilizzati per designare tale standard, comprese abbreviazioni e acronimi quali IDE, EIDE, ATAPI, UDMA ed il più recente PATA per differenziarsi dallo standard SATA. Gli standard ATA permettono collegamenti con lunghezze di cavo comprese tra 45 e 90 cm, quindi l'utilizzo prevalente per tale tecnologia è per le memorie di massa all'interno dei personal computer. Tale soluzione rappresenta nelle implementazioni dei personal computer esistenti fino al 2004 l'interfaccia più comune e la meno costosa per tale applicazione.
