The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (commonly known as the United Kingdom, the U.K., or Britain) is a country to the north-west of mainland Europe. It comprises the island of Great Britain, the north-east part of the island of Ireland and many small local islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK with a land border, sharing it with the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel and the Irish Sea. The largest island, Great Britain, is linked to France by the Channel Tunnel.

Le Royaume-Uni est un État indépendant d'Europe de l'Ouest créé en 1707, composé de la Grande-Bretagne (Angleterre, Écosse et Pays de Galles) et de l’Irlande du Nord et membre de l'Union européenne depuis 1973. La plus grande partie de ses territoires sont situés à proximité de la côte nord-ouest de l'Europe continentale et sont entourés par la mer du Nord, la Manche, la mer d'Irlande et l'océan Atlantique.

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) ist ein souveräner Staat vor der Nordwestküste Kontinentaleuropas.Der größte Inselstaat Europas ist eine politische Union der vier Teilstaaten England, Schottland, Wales und Nordirland. Das Vereinigte Königreich besitzt auch mehrere Überseegebiete. Die Kronbesitztümer der Isle of Man und der Kanalinseln sind der britischen Krone unterstellt, sind jedoch als selbständige Länder nicht Bestandteil des Vereinigten Königreichs (→ Suzeränität). Als konstitutionelle Monarchie unterhält das Land ferner Beziehungen zu fünfzehn Commonwealth Realms, deren Staatsoberhaupt der britische Monarch ist.

Il Regno Unito di Gran Bretagna e Irlanda del Nord (in inglese United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland), spesso designato con la sineddoche Inghilterra, è uno stato dell'Europa occidentale. Fu formato da una serie di Atti d'Unione che riunirono le seguenti nazioni costitutive: Inghilterra, Galles, Scozia e Irlanda del Nord. Gran parte dell'Irlanda si separò nel 1922 costituendo lo Stato Libero d'Irlanda (l'attuale Repubblica d'Irlanda), la parte restante è ancora sotto il Regno Unito e viene chiamata Irlanda del Nord.

| |} Het Verenigd Koninkrijk van Groot-Brittannië en Noord-Ierland is een staat in West-Europa gelegen tussen de Noordzee en de Atlantische Oceaan, met ongeveer 60,6 miljoen inwoners. In de moderne geschiedenis heeft deze staat als grootmacht een belangrijke rol gespeeld. De twee onderdelen van het Verenigd Koninkrijk omvatten in totaal vier gebieden die voortkomen uit de landen die in het koninkrijk zijn verenigd:Het eiland Groot-Brittannië omvat:1. Engeland in het zuiden (50.714.000 inwoners); 2. Schotland in het noorden (5.108.000 inwoners);3. Wales in het westen (2.977.000 inwoners);het noordoostelijk deel van het Ierse eiland vormt:4. Noord-Ierland (1.733.000 inwoners). Deze gebieden hebben nog altijd een duidelijk herkenbare culturele, maar deels ook politieke identiteit, die hoorbaar is in de verschillende talen en dialecten die er gesproken worden, zichtbaar in onder meer vlaggen, bankbiljetten en plaatsnaamborden, en voor de bevolking bovendien voelbaar in recentelijk tot stand gekomen vormen van beperkt zelfbestuur in Noord-Ierland, Schotland en Wales. Dit alles laat evenwel onverlet, dat in  internationale betrekkingen alleen het soevereine Verenigd Koninkrijk een rol speelt. In de strikte betekenis van 'onafhankelijke staat' zijn de 'landen binnen het koninkrijk' geen landen, maar in een wat ruimere betekenis van 'begrensd gebied met een politieke identiteit' wel. Gebruik makend van deze dubbele betekenis kan het Verenigd Koninkrijk worden aangeduid als 'vier landen in één land'.
