U-boat is the anglicized version of the German word , itself an abbreviation of Unterseeboot (undersea boat), and refers to military submarines operated by Germany in World War I and World War II. Although in theory U-boats could have been useful fleet weapons against enemy naval warships, in practice they were most effectively used in an economic-warfare role, enforcing a naval blockade against enemy shipping. The primary targets of the U-boat campaigns in both wars were the merchant convoys bringing supplies from Canada and the United States to Europe. Austrian submarines of World War I were also known as "U-boats".

Ein U-Boot (kurz für Unterseeboot; im militärischen Sprachgebrauch Uboot ohne Bindestrich) ist ein Boot, das für die Unterwasserfahrt gebaut wurde. Moderne große U-Boote, die eine Masse von bis zu 26.000 Tonnen haben können, werden auch U-Schiffe genannt.Der Begriff U-Boot bezeichnet speziell militärische Unterwassereinheiten. Zivile U-Boote, ob kommerziell oder für die Forschung, werden meist Tauchboote genannt. Auch die im Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Einsatz gekommenen U-Boote werden zur Unterscheidung gegenüber den heutigen U-Booten, die monatelang unter Wasser bleiben können, in der Fachliteratur eher als Tauchboote bezeichnet, da sie im Unterwassereinsatz wenig leistungsfähig waren (aufgrund zu kurzer Tauchzeiten und zu geringer Tauchtiefen) und somit hauptsächlich aufgetaucht zum Einsatz kamen.

U-Boot è il termine tedesco per indicare genericamente sottomarini e sommergibili. È una abbreviazione di Unterseeboot, letteralmente nave sottomarina. Il termine è utilizzato nelle altre lingue come sinonimo dei battelli sottomarini tedeschi della prima e seconda guerra mondiale, anche se spesso si trova scritto nella forma "anglicizzata" di U-Boat. Gli obiettivi delle campagne degli U-Boot in entrambi i conflitti furono i convogli che portavano rifornimenti dagli Stati Uniti in Europa. Il termine U-Boot, seguito da un numero, esempio U-Boot 47 indica uno specifico vascello, mentre U-Boot Tipo II una determinata classe.
