U-Bahn

U-Bahn is the German abbreviation for Untergrundbahn ("underground railway"), referring to a means of urban rapid transit, such as the "London underground" or "Paris métro". The term was created at the beginning of the 20th century in Berlin, where the Deutsche Reichsbahn Gesellschaft ("German state railway company") (predecessor of today's Deutsche Bahn) created a system of urban and suburban railway lines with fast electric trains with short stopping intervals, called the S-Bahn (Schnellbahn, "rapid railway"). The Hochbahngesellschaft ("elevated railway company"), operating elevated and suburban lines, decided they required an equally short and memorable name for their system, and thus called it U-Bahn, for Untergrundbahn ("underground railway"). In Germany the most common symbol for the U-Bahn is a white "U" on a square blue background, in Austria it is on a circular background.

Die U-Bahn, auch Untergrundbahn oder Metro genannt, ist ein zu den Bahnen gehöriges öffentliches Nahverkehrsmittel (ÖPNV, Stadtverkehr) ähnlich der S-, der Straßen- oder der Stadtbahn (zusammengefasst als Schienenpersonennahverkehr). Auch wenn das U eigentlich eine Abkürzung für Untergrund ist, verkehren viele U-Bahnen auch oberirdisch; aus diesem Grund wird das U in Deutschland mitunter auch als unabhängig interpretiert, handelt es sich doch um Schienenverkehrssysteme, die als eigenständige Systeme kreuzungsfrei und unabhängig von anderen städtischen Verkehrssystemen konzipiert sind.

La U-Bahn è la terminologia in lingua tedesca per definire la classica metropolitana, solitamente sotterranea, in uso nelle città tedesche e austriache. Infatti la lettera "U" proviene dal lemma Untergrund, cioè sotterraneo.Estremamente veloce e capillare, si integra con la S-Bahn, linea cittadina pesante che utilizza le infrastrutture ferroviarie di superficie, e la Straßenbahn, termine indicante le tramvie, con le quali condivide sovente le stazioni ottenendo in tal modo un impianto di trasporto multimodale.

Een metro of ondergrondse is een vorm van openbaar spoorwegvervoer in grote steden of agglomeraties dat gebruikmaakt van een conflictvrije baan (ongelijkvloerse kruisingen). Dat betekent dat de lijn meestal is aangelegd in een tunnel of op een viaduct. De metro kenmerkt zich door een hoge rijfrequentie en een grote reizigerscapaciteit en houdt zowel wat betreft snelheid als stationsafstand en zwaarte van het materieel ongeveer het midden tussen trein en tram.
