Tuvalu

Tuvalu (IPA: [t:u:'valu]), formerly known as the Ellice Islands, is a Polynesian island nation located in the Pacific Ocean midway between Hawaii and Australia. Its nearest neighbours are Kiribati, Samoa and Fiji. Comprising four reef islands and five true atolls, with a gross land area of just 26 square kilometers (10 sq mi), it is the second-least populated independent country in the world, with Vatican City having the least. It is the smallest member by population of the United Nations. In terms of physical land size Tuvalu is the fourth smallest country in the world, larger than only the Vatican City - 0.44 km²; Monaco - 1.95 km² and Nauru - 21 km².

Tuvalu (bis zur Unabhängigkeit am 1. Oktober 1978 Ellice Islands) ist eine konstitutionelle Monarchie und Mitglied des Commonwealth of Nations. Hauptstadt ist das Atoll Funafuti und Regierungssitz das auf diesem Atoll gelegene Dorf Vaiaku. Tuvalu ist in 9 Inseln gegliedert. Auf deutsch bedeutet Tuvalu „Acht Inseln“, weil ursprünglich nur 8 Inseln bewohnt waren und eigene Inselräte (gewählte Vertretungen) hatten. Die neunte (und südlichste) Insel, Niulakita, wurde erst 1949 mit Einwohnern der übervölkerten Insel Niutao besiedelt.
