Tunnel

A tunnel is an underground passage. The definition of what constitutes a tunnel is not universally agreed upon. However, in general tunnels are at least twice as long as they are wide. In addition, they should be completely enclosed on all sides, save for the openings at each end.A tunnel may be for pedestrians or cyclists, for general road traffic, for motor vehicles only, for rail traffic, or for a canal. Some are aqueducts, constructed purely for carrying water — for consumption, for  hydroelectric purposes or as sewers — while others carry other services such as  telecommunications cables. There are even tunnels designed as wildlife crossings for European badgers and other endangered species. Some secret tunnels have also been made as a method of entrance or escape from an area, such as the Cu Chi Tunnels or the tunnels connecting the Gaza Strip to Egypt.

Ein Tunnel, (auch Unterführung) ist eine künstliche Passage, die Berge, Gewässer oder andere Hindernisse (in der Regel als Verkehrsweg) unterquert. Teilweise dienen Tunnel auch zum Schutz der Anwohner vor Straßen- oder Schienenverkehrslärm. Der Tunnel unterscheidet sich von der Galerie oder Einhausung dadurch, dass er abgesehen von der Zu- und Ausfahrt in der Regel allseitig geschlossen ist. Ein sehr kurzer Tunnel ist die Unterführung.

In ingegneria civile un tunnel (in lingua italiana definito anche come traforo o galleria) è una perforazione del terreno approssimativamente orizzontale, nella quale domina la lunghezza sulle altre due dimensioni. Normalmente è artificiale.I tunnel si costruiscono mediante perforazione del terreno, a mano o tramite l'utilizzo di macchine o a cielo aperto, ricoprendo poi la costruzione con cemento o terra. Lo scavo a scudi è una delle tecniche più comuni di costruzione di tunnel e consiste nell'applicazione delle pareti di contenimento (prefabbricate o realizzate in opera) con il procedere della perforazione.
