Tucson, Arizona

Tucson (pronounced , Spanish: Tucsón ) is the seat of Pima County, Arizona, United States, located 118 miles (188 km) southeast of Phoenix and 60 miles (98 km) north of the Mexican border. As of July 1 2006, a Census Bureau estimate puts the city's population at 518,956, with a metropolitan area population at 946,362. In 2005, Tucson ranked as the 32^nd-largest city and 52^nd-largest metropolitan area in the U.S. It is the largest city in southern Arizona and the second largest in the state. Tucson is the site of the flagship school of the state university system, the University of Arizona. Major incorporated suburbs of Tucson include Oro Valley and Marana northwest of the city, South Tucson (surrounded by Tucson), and Sahuarita south of the city. Communities in the vicinity of Tucson (some within or overlapping the city limits) include Casas Adobes, Catalina, Catalina Foothills, Flowing Wells, Green Valley, Marana, Tanque Verde, New Pascua, and Vail.

Nel 2005 contava 515.526 abitanti, contando anche l'intera area metropolitana la sua conurbazione raggiunge quasi il milione di abitanti.La zona dove sorge Tucson è stata a lungo disabitata sino al 1775, anno in cui gli spagnoli vi costruirono un presidio fortificato. Tucson divenne parte del Messico dopo che questo conseguì l'indipendenza dalla Spagna nel 1821. In seguito all'acquisizione Gadsden nel 1853, la città divenne parte degli Stati Uniti d'America. Dall'agosto 1861, sino a metà del 1862, Tucson fu la capitale del Territorio Confederato dell'Arizona. Fino al 1863 la città, come tutta l'Arizona faceva parte del Territorio del Nuovo Messico. Dal 1867 al 1889, Tucson fu la capitale del Territorio dell'Arizona e poi, dal 1912 la capitale del nuovo stato. Nel 1885 fu fondata a Tucson l'Università dell'Arizona. Nel 1900 a Tucson vivevano 7.531 persone, nel corso del XX secolo la popolazione cittadina registrò un forte incremento: nel 1910 gli abitanti erano 13.913, nel 1920 20.292 nel 1940 36.818.

Tucson (uitspraak: /ˈtusɑn/) is een stad in het zuidelijke deel van de Amerikaanse staat Arizona. Het is de hoofdplaats van Pima County. De stad heeft 486.699 inwoners (2000) en de bevolking van de agglomeratie bedraagt in hetzelfde jaar 843.746 mensen. Tucson ligt 217 kilometer ten zuidoosten van Phoenix, de grootste stad van de staat. De naam van de stad stamt af van het O'odham woord Cuk Şon, dat zwarte basis betekent, een verwijzing naar de vulkanische bergen ten westen van de stad.
