Tuareg is a name that was applied to them by early explorers and historians (since Leo Africanus). They call themselves variously Kel Tamasheq, Kel Tamajaq "Speakers of Tamasheq" and Imuhagh, Imazaghan or Imashaghen meaning "the Free people". The Tuareg people also call themselves Kel Tagelmust i.e. "People of the Veil" (See Rodd 1926).
